Translation is a talent that emerges when the heart joins forces with the head

Translation means re-creation. It is a process in which the head processes the language and the heart adds a touch of poetry. The translator’s art can be likened to the metamorphosis that is life itself: it requires change through time and space, all the while conserving the sense of the original and its own unique essence. Consequently, a proficient, faithful translation remains similar to the original, but will never replicate it exactly, because the act of translation substantiates the unique nature of the hand that creates – or recreates – the work. This is valid for any type of translation, be it literary, commercial, technical or medical. The translator not only performs a linguistic analysis of the source text, but indeed a service in which their experience, knowledge and understanding of the text combines and engages with that of the writer, agent, engineer or doctor who penned it. A quality, professional translation is necessarily based on a constructive exchange with the client; the importance of dialogue and the sharing of experience cannot be overemphasised, and must be accompanied by awareness of our own skills and respect for those of others.
