Sworn translations:

Generally speaking, these are translations given “official” status by following a specific bureaucratic procedure that involves solemnly swearing a translation is faithful to an original document. This oath is taken before a court official, in a specific office for the purpose known as Ufficio Asseverazioni Perizie e Traduzioni. The relevant stamps and duty stamps are then applied to the translation (except for a number of exemptions contemplated by the law), and the pertinent declaration is signed by both the translator and the court registrar or official.

Legalisations:

in order for a public deed or record to be valid abroad, the signature of the public official at the bottom of it must be authenticated. In the case of translations, legalisation consists of verifying the legal validity of the signature of the registrar who signed the sworn translation, so that the legal value thereof may also be recognised abroad. There are two procedures, depending on the country the document is required for:

For countries that are signatories of the Hague Convention*, there is a simplified legalisation procedure that consists of an Apostille.

Procedure:

  • Translation carried out and sworn before the Court
  • Legalisation of the sworn translation at the Public Prosecutor’s Office

The document can be collected within 2-3 working days.

For countries that are not signatories of the Hague Convention, the procedure is more complex, and also requires consular legalisation.

Procedure:

Procedura:

  • Legalisation of the original document at the Public Prosecutor’s Office (for legal or notarial deeds and records) or the Prefecture (administrative deeds and records)
  • Translation carried out and sworn before the Court
  • Legalisation of the court registrar’s signature at the Public Prosecutor’s Office
  • Legalisation at the Consulate

Costs, times and procedures followed vary according to the consulate.
