The weid-/woid/wid root that forms the base of the Greek term Syneidesis, semantically mirrored by the Latin con-scientia, carries within it the true sense of this venture: a venture that brings together different peoples, different cultures. This same sense also emerges in the German term Bewusstsein (“consciousness”) and Wissenschaft (“science”), in the Swedish vetenskap (“science”), in the Italian vedere (see), and indeed in the English “wise”. The idea of being aware, or “conscious” of something because we have “seen”, and of knowledge through experience, effectively synthesises the idea of a shared intellectual experience. Syn-eidesis, with-knowledge: a journey through self-awareness combined with a vision of the world that looks outwards and engages with the true vision of the other.
The key lies in seeing for ourselves and in ourselves, and showing what we see to others, because each one of us has something to teach and something to learn.
